Cocteau Twins – Victorialand

Victorialand (1986) is the fourth album by Scottish band Cocteau Twins. Working without member Simon Raymonde, who had been enlisted to work on This Mortal Coil’s Filigree & Shadow album, vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and guitarist/producer Robin Guthrie produced a record almost completely devoid of percussion, drenching acoustic guitars in reverberant space to create a wide, expansive sound that borders on ambient. Rather than trying for a full-band approach, Fraser and Guthrie instead created a much more simply beautiful effort, with a relaxed air to it. Rhythms are subtler, with bass and drum machine often totally eschewed in favor of Guthrie’s delicate guitar filigrees and lush, produced textures. Fraser is, as always, in wonderfully fine voice; her words are quite indecipherable, but the feelings are no less strong for it. The music on this cd is probably some of the best from this group of etheral soundscapes and design. from the “eerie lazy calm” opening of the album….all the way through to the unbelievable “the thinner the air”…this album does not stop delivering. “Omminmak” is more upbeat, with almost “double-dutch” sounding, “child singing and rhyming” vocals. “Throughout The Dark Months Of April And May” is more atmospheric, with a slightly darker edge…not dark as in scary dark, but dark as in regret and sorrow. “Little Stacey” is the closest thing to a “tradition” popular music song, with lyrics that are almost understandable and a very pronounced melody. “Victorialand” is a great album to to pick for people who just started getting into the Cocteau Twins’ music
